Skateboarding

Did You Know?

“For those of you who think skateboarding is a man's sport, here's something for you. Women have been as involved in this sport as men since its inception. The first female professional skateboarder in history was Patti McGee.”

“Skateboarding originated in California, and the first skateboard had handles so that it could be easily maneuvered by its users.”

“…skateboarding [is] actually considered to have developed from surfing, and was initially known as sidewalk surfing, with the first skateboard being introduced in the year 1950.”

What to Expect

What to Expect

Skateboarding is a fun activity to do with friends, a great way to get around, and a great physical challenge for those who want to push their limits!  However you like to skateboard, you’re sure to have lots of fun.

Gear Up!

Gear Up!

You just need a skateboard and a helmet to get started (and elbow and knee pads are always recommended)!  Be sure your helmet fits properly!  As for choosing your first skateboard, that can be a little tricky.  The main thing you have to decide is whether you want to build your own board, or select one that’s already complete.  As for the dimensions of your board, it’s difficult for a first timer to know what to pick!  We recommend you visit your local skate shop for advice.

Dress Cool

What to Wear

The most important item of clothing when you’re skateboarding is your shoes!  Make sure your shoes are secure on your foot, and that they have a good grip on the bottom so that you don’t lose your footing.  Sun protection is important any time you go outdoors – so be sure to wear sunscreen!
