A recent archeological discovery!

An area resident located a 39-foot pine canoe which dates back approximately 1,100 years in Pinellas County.

The Native American Tomol is the oldest example that we have of ancient ocean-faring vesels in North America.

They were historically and currently used by the Chumash and Tongva Native Americans in the Santa Barbara and Los Angeles area.

The Māori, indigenous Polynesian people arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyage. Canoe traditions are extremely important to the identity of Māori. 

Canoe = a lightweight narrow boat pointed at both ends and open on top, propelled by one or more seated or kneeling paddlers facing the direction of travel using a single-bladed paddle. You can expect to have a great time while paddling down a river or on a lake.

Canoes are used for touring, camping, racing, whitewater canoeing, freestyle, and general recreation. The use of the canoe dictates how it's made and what shape it is. Some type of canoes are flatwater racing, general recreation, whitewater & touring canoes.

You'll need a canoe, a paddle and hopefully some friends. As well as:

  • Duct Tape
  • Paddles
  • Dry Gear Bags
  • Throw Rope
  • Bailer & Sponge
  • Nylon Cord
  • River/Lake Maps 
  • Compass

What to Wear

The most important item of clothing when canoeing is a life vest!  It's also a good idea to wear gloves, sunglasses and sneakers or river sandals.

Also, depending on the the type of water you'll be canoeing in, you might want to wear a helmet. Sun protection is important any time you go outdoors – so be sure to wear sunscreen!

While caneoing you'll be sitting right at water-level, which will give you a great view of your surroundings on the river or lake. You can also look down - depending how clear the water is, you may be able to see things under the water!
